If fuel consumption rises, Tehran could become a gas importer. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said this, Trend.az news agency reports, according to “ТАСС”.

“If fuel consumption continues to rise, we will become gasoline importers again in a year”, the presidents press service quoted him saying. According to Rouhani, “in order to preserve our ability to supply ourselves and to control our gasoline consumption, a plan was implemented to introduce quotas and to increase fuel prices”.

“The 310 trillion Iranian riyals (about $ 2.5 billion) raised through this initiative, will be used to help the most vulnerable in the society”, said the Iranian president.

The situation in the Iranian economy became acute, following the unilateral withdrawal of the US from the nuclear deal in May 2018 and the resumption of sanctions against Tehran. Against the background of the cuts of the revenues from oil sales and oil exports in the budget, the Iranian authorities decided on November 15, 2019, to raise gasoline prices to 30,000 rials (about $ 0.2) per liter. In fact, this meant a threefold increase in the price of fuel.

In addition, special quotas were introduced - 60 liters of gasoline per person per month, costing 15,000 rials per liter ($ 0.1).
