„The use of innovative financial instruments alongside bilateral and regional support programmes will further deepen economic ties between the EU and Azerbaijan, promote the diversification of the country's economy, strengthen regional connectivity, advance the green and digital transition, create new skills and jobs, and foster inclusive and sustainable development“, the European Commission representative stressed.
Additional gas exports from Azerbaijan play an important role in achieving the European Union's energy diversification goals, a European Commission representative told Trend.
Energy is a cornerstone of cooperation between the EU and Azerbaijan. It is based on the Memorandum of Understanding signed by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in July 2022. The EU is grateful to Azerbaijan as a reliable partner and energy supplier. Additional gas supplies from Azerbaijan play an important role in achieving the EU's diversification goals.
In 2016, we launched a new regional program, EU4Energy, which supports Eastern Partnership countries, including Azerbaijan, in achieving their energy policy goals and improving energy efficiency. The new phase of the program was launched on 1 January 2026," a European Commission representative stated.
He also noted that, within the framework of the Global Gateway initiative and the Connectivity Agenda, the EU aims to promote investment and strengthen connectivity not only in the transport sector, but also in the energy and digital sectors in order to stimulate cross-border trade.

It's worth noting that Azerbaijan exports gas to Europe via the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP), which is the final section of the Southern Gas Corridor. TAP's initial capacity is 10 billion cubic meters per year, but it can be expanded to 20 billion cubic meters per year. In July 2022, Azerbaijan and the European Commission reached an agreement to double gas supplies to Europe by 2027.
In 2025, Azerbaijan produced 51.5 billion cubic meters of natural gas. Of this volume, 14.1 billion cubic meters came from the Azeri-Chirag-Guneshli fields, 27.9 billion cubic meters from the Shah Deniz field, 1.6 billion cubic meters from the Absheron field, and 7.9 billion cubic meters from SOCAR.
During the specified period, gas exports amounted to 25.2 billion cubic meters. Of this, 12.8 billion cubic meters were delivered to Europe, 9.6 billion cubic meters to Turkey (including 5.6 billion cubic meters via the TANAP pipeline), 2.3 billion cubic meters to Georgia, and 0.5 billion cubic meters to Syria.
Since January 2026, additional long-term capacity has been available through the TAP pipeline under the new Gas Transportation Agreement (GTA). During the same period, SOCAR began supplying Azerbaijani gas to customers in Austria and Germany via TAP. This expanded the geographic reach of Azerbaijani gas supplies in Europe and brought the total number of European countries receiving gas from Azerbaijan to 16.
