Teodor Detchev: There are five reasons why Azerbaijan is valuable for Europe

In Azerbaijan, the regime is liberalized in proportion to the quantities of gas that have to travel to Europe – there is an obvious correlation and it is positive. The country is valuable to Europe for five reasons. These are:

- natural gas;

- Azerbaijan's huge potential to produce green energy to be imported to Europe - Azerbaijan has the ability to produce wind energy around the clock;

- Azerbaijan has become the main route through which Kazakhstan's oil comes, which by no means is not a small quantity;

- green hydrogen – gas infrastructure can be used to transport green hydrogen;

- the East-West corridor.

This was stated by Assoc. Prof. Teodor Detchev Ph.D., head of "Blacksea Caspia" - a laboratory on the problems of the Black Sea and Caspian regions at the HSSE, in the program "Club Investor" with host Ivaylo Lakov.

Detchev commented on the visit of the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev to Sofia. "It was putting on paper things that have been talked about for years," he pointed out.

According to him, there is already a document publicly supported and "blessed" by the European Commission regarding the transfer of gas from Azerbaijan to Europe - Romania, Slovakia and Hungary.

"The state oil company SOCAR of Azerbaijan already has an office in Bulgaria," noted Detchev.

"Things are getting serious. The intention is to build a vertical corridor to connect with the BRUA gas pipeline (Romania, Hungary, Austria) - all this is already being given a go".

Detchev also focused on governance in Azerbaijan. He pointed out that Ilham Aliyev succeeds his father Heydar Aliyev, inherits a fixed situation. "His father comes to power at a time when Azerbaijani statehood hangs in the balance, because the so-called “People's Front” has failed in governance. When Heydar Aliyev came to power the key issue was that the integrity of the state had to be be saved. His father reoriented Azerbaijan in one fell swoop towards the West. This is the so-called “Deal of the century”, in which a consortium of all significant Western oil companies signed a contract with Azerbaijan according to which 80 percent of the profits from all oil trade remain for Azerbaijan," the guest recalled.

He noted that there are many opposition parties in Azerbaijan and there are opposition members of parliament. "The opposition is not in prison," the guest pointed out.

Another topic that Detchev commented on was the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh.

„Nagorno-Karabakh is an example of how one should know when to stop. If the Armenians had signed a peace treaty an hour before the war began in 2020, Nagorno-Karabakh would have the highest degree of autonomy in Azerbaijan“.

The resolution of the conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia at this hour is 90 percent in the hands of Baku and Yerevan, it became clear from the conversation.
