Formally, the new stage in the cooperation between Turkemenistan and Uzbekistan started on April 23, 2018, when the President of Turkmenistan - Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov arrived in Uzbekistan on a state visit at the invitation of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan - Shavkat Mirziyoyev.
During the negotiations at the extended format, issues of further development of trade and economic cooperation, strengthening bilateral relations in petrochemical, transport-communication, agricultural, cultural, humanitarian and other spheres were discussed.
17 documents aimed at further strengthening and progressive development of bilateral cooperation in political, trade-economic, investment, transport-communication, educational and sports spheres were signed.
In 2019, Turkmenistan has entered the list of Uzbekistan's top ten foreign trade partners, “Trend.az” reported, citing the State Statistics Committee of Uzbekistan.
From January to November 2019, total trade between the two neighboring countries reached US $ 457.8 million. For comparison, the previous year's turnover was $ 243.9 million.
During the period under consideration, Turkmenistan exported goods and production to Uzbekistan for $ 374.1 million and imported goods for $ 83.7 million from Uzbekistan.
Turkmenistan buys mineral fertilizers, fruits, transport equipment, construction materials, electrical equipment, and sells petroleum products, polymers and cotton yarn.
It should be noted that the upward trend in the trade between the two countries emerged last year. The total trade turnover between Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan in 2018 was US $ 274 million compared to 159 million in 2017.
It is noteworthy that Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, as countries with impressive hydrocarbon reserves, advocate diversification of energy flows. A good example of this is the construction of the Turkmenistan - Uzbekistan - Kazakhstan - China gas pipeline, which was completed in 2009.
In December 2019, Turkmenistan began exporting electricity to Uzbekistan. A project for the creation of the Uzbekistan-Turkmenistan-Iran-Oman transport route is also under discussion. This would significantly increase international transit traffic.
