Interconnection with TAP to turn Alexandroupolis into new energy hub

“This port will evolve, will become a port of entry into Central and Eastern Europe, and play an extremely important role for the city and the region in the years to come. And the third aspect, which is in no respect less important, is energy. The new liquefied natural gas terminal that will be built a few miles from here and the interconnection with TAP, will result in Alexandroupolis, and Thrace, becoming a new energy hub. And this as a whole serves the new vision for our country. A country interconnected, with strong defence capacity, sovereign, with a bright economic future in a prosperous Europe,” Minister Nikos Dendias said.

Interconnection with the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) will turn Alexandroupolis into a new energy hub, Trend quoted Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikos Dendias as saying following his visit to the Port of Alexandroupolis.

“The port of Alexandroupolis is a big bet for the Greek government, for the Mitsotakis government, but also for the Thracian society as a whole, and for the Greek society. From the beginning, in 2019, we set three guiding pillars. The first one is defence. That, I believe, is fully served through the two Agreements we signed with the US, the MDCA and its amendment. The port of Alexandroupolis has been included in the planning, and thus serves, in the truest sense, the Greek, national interest,” he said.

Dendias noted that apart from that, there is a trade and economic aspect.

A country interconnected, with strong defence capacity, sovereign, with a bright economic future in a prosperous Europe,” the minister said.

As the European section of the Southern Gas Corridor, TAP has the capacity to transport approximately 10 billion cubic meters of gas per annum (bcm/a) to several markets in Europe. The pipeline is also designed with the potential to expand its throughput capacity up to 20 bcm/a.

TAP is strategically and economically important to Europe and essential in providing reliable access to a new source of natural gas. TAP plays a significant role in boosting Europe’s energy security, supply diversification, as well as decarbonisation objectives.

TAP’s shareholding is comprised of bp (20 percent), SOCAR (20 percent), Snam (20 percent), Fluxys (19 percent), Enagás (16 percent) and Axpo (5 percent).
