The interconnector with Greece provides access to natural gas to a number of municipalities

One of the strategic benefits of the interconnector is the possibility of access to the gas transmission network for Bulgarian municipalities and regions that have not yet had the option of connectivity. The project company ICGB, which is responsible for the implementation of the project, ensures full cooperation of all stakeholders in terms of providing access to the interconnector in accordance with European and Bulgarian legislation.

The project company is ready to cooperate with all interested gas distribution companies and industrial customers, which will allow businesses and households to benefit from natural gas at competitive prices.

The implementation of the Greece-Bulgaria interconnector is important not only for the energy diversification of our country, but also allows for direct access of a number of Bulgarian municipalities to the gas transmission network. With the commissioning of the pipeline, which is scheduled for July 1, 2022 at the latest, Bulgaria will have access to natural gas from new sources, which will make supplies more secure. The entry of new shippers will significantly improve competition in the natural gas market, which in turn will lead to competitive prices and make blue fuel more affordable for businesses and households.

ICGB has already established cooperation with the licensed for the region gas distribution companies and interested industrial customers from Kardzhali and Dimitrovgrad. In this regard, the project company has already designed and implemented the necessary technical facilities on the territory of the two cities, providing the necessary conditions for access to the gas transmission network.

The IGB pipeline is also key to meeting the decarbonisation targets and the ability to use natural gas as a transition fuel until the full conversion to hydrogen. The thermal power plants using coals located in the Maritza Basin region will have access to natural gas, which would ensure a smooth transition to fulfilling the commitments under the European Green Deal.

The implementation of the IGB gas pipeline is a guarantee for providing reliable and efficient access to natural gas for businesses and households. This important role reinforces the strategic benefits of project implementation as an opportunity to support and develop Bulgarian regions and businesses.
